Emblem Enamel Watch

England | 18th century | Gold, diamonds, enamel | Charles Haley (maker)

This family crest watch is set with three pieces of painted enamel with different motifs. On the left side of the hanging chain is the winding tool and on the right side is a small plaque with initials, made of enamel and set with diamonds, holding a bundle of carefully woven hair as a token of affection, and the case also bears the initials "MB" set with diamonds. The owner of the hair and the owner of the watch are both long gone, but sentiment has overcome time and survived with this beautiful timepiece, which is increasingly precious as a link between art, technology, and humanity.
